Craigmillar Library is a vital local hub for people and services. Previously, the back of the library had a grassy area available for public use, but this fell into disrepair and is currently closed.
We want to reclaim this space, transforming it into a sensory garden for everyone to use, along with raised beds for communal veg growing.

A sensory garden is designed to be a relaxing and vibrant space, with plants that smell, taste and look good.
Our vision is that the garden can be used by people in the library as somewhere to get away from the stresses of daily life, where people can volunteer and be connected to nature, and where organisations can run activities.
This month we received funding for the project to go ahead, and we now have a survey out asking Craigmillar residents how they would like the garden to look and be used.
The next step will be designing the library garden based on community feedback, running volunteer sessions throughout 2026 to build this dream into a reality.

We are looking for an experienced community gardener to lead this work. This role will include co-designing the garden layout, engaging closley with volunteers and motivating them in weekly garden sessions at the library.
Garden sessions will include repairing and building raised beds, prepping the ground for the sensory garden, and planting a range of scented, colourful and edible plants suitable for Scotland. The end of the project will be a celebration and launch event of the garden in summer 2026, organised by the community gardener, for all of the community to enjoy.

An equality and diversity monitoring form also needs to be filled in, which can be downloaded here:
